Fruit - Blackberries & Hybrid Berries

Blackberries with large berries and no thorns? A white blackberry? We are always finding new and interesting variations on your favorite berries. Train them along wires or fences to enjoy delicious blackberry pies and jams all summer long, or freeze them to use in holiday treats in the winter!

You can learn more about growing berries on our resources page.

Bareroot berries | January to March

Nearly all of our berries are sold in bareroot from January to March. We find this is the best way to get your berries started since they're dormant until the weather warms up in spring.

Potted berries | all year round

Some berries are notoriously difficult to get started from bareroot (ahem, raspberries), as many gardeners will have experienced. Because of this, we also stock a large selection of potted berries in spring and throughout the rest of the year. The best selection, and the best time to plant in order to have ripe summer berries the same year, is in spring (April to June). Outside of these times our selection can be limited.

White flowers are borne in late spring, and are followed in July and August by small to medium-sized, juicy, off-white berries tinged with pink, sweeter than ordinary blackberries. Despite its small size and meek appearance, blackberry Polarberry is a tough, resilient, easy-to-grow plant which will provide you with fruit for eight to ten years. Expect a couple of punnets each year from each plant. Cut fruited canes to the ground after fruiting and tie in the new growth which will carry next year’s berries.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Fertile, well drained soil
Position: Full sun
Pick: From early July
Keep: Berries do not keep, but can be frozen
Hardiness: Hardy
Pollination: Self-fertile
Uses: Eating, cooking, preserving
Height: to 4’ (120cm) Spread: to 18” (45cm)

["Berries","Unusual Edibles
"option1":"Pot | 9cm","option2":"Young plant","option3":null
Blackberry Polar Berry® -
