Fruit - Gooseberries & Jostaberries

Tough, spiny gooseberry plants are easy to grow, producing generous crops of large berries for eating (if you like that tart, summery flavor), jams, and pies. The jostaberry (a gooseberry crossed with a blackcurrant) has the thornless nature of a currant with larger, sweeter fruits.

You can learn more about growing berries on our resources page.

Bareroot berries | January to March

Nearly all of our berries are sold in bareroot from January to March. We find this is the best way to get your berries started since they're dormant until the weather warms up in spring.

Potted berries | all year round

Some berries are notoriously difficult to get started from bareroot (ahem, raspberries), as many gardeners will have experienced. Because of this, we also stock a large selection of potted berries in spring and throughout the rest of the year. The best selection, and the best time to plant in order to have ripe summer berries the same year, is in spring (April to June). Outside of these times our selection can be limited.

The berries are small to medium-sized, deep purplish-red, with a very good, sweet-tart flavour somewhat reminiscent of blueberries. Can be eaten fresh when fully ripe. The bush is vigorous and upright in habit, and particularly suitable for training as a cordon. Heavy cropper, and easy to grow. Thin the fruit for larger berries. It looks like a (thornless!) gooseberry, and is usually grown as a bush, but stooled (planted deeply) like a blackcurrant. Jostaberry is long-lived and very vigorous, but can be pruned to a manageable size or grown as a trained form, e.g. cordon. Heavy cropper. Resistant to the diseases that can plague its parents, but may need frost protection, as it flowers early. The Jostaberry fruit looks like a huge blackcurrant, reddish-black, richly flavoured and rich in Vitamin C. Pick when fully ripe for eating, or use for jams, pies and juices.

Site: Some shelter
Soil: Rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil
Position: Full sun
Pick: mid-late July
Keep: Does not keep; freezes well
Hardiness: Hardy
Pollination: Self-fertile
Uses: Eating, cooking
Height and Spread: 6’ (1.8m) x 6’ (1.8m)

["Bareroot","Berries
"option1":"Bareroot","option2":"1yr","option3":null
Jostaberry -
