Shrubs - Summer Interest

Buddlejas, Hydrangeas, Hypericum and other summer flowering shrubs take over in June, July, and August to keep the flowers flowing through the long days of summer.

Learn more about what to plant and when to plant it in our advice section and find even more information in our resources.

Bareroot shrubs | mid-November to March

Bareroot shrubs are only available from mid-November to March. You can learn more about the differences between bareroot and potted plants in our advice section.

Potted shrubs | all year round

Potted shrubs are available all year, but the best selection, and the best time to plant, is in late spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October).

Daisy bush Zennorensis holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and has won the Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year award. Does well in mild, coastal locations. An easy shrub that only requires light trimming, and is resistant to pests and diseases.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Any light, well-drained soil, preferably moist
Position: Full sun
Season of interest: All year, late spring and early summer in particular
Hardiness: to -5 to -10º
Height: 6’6” (2m) Spread: 6’6” (2m) in 5-10 years

"}

Makes an excellent specimen on its own but is most often planted as a hedge. The fresh growth can be anywhere between dark to bright red and can be a welcome sight in Winter and early Spring. Red Robin is evergreen and can be clipped into a neat hedge as low as 4 ft or left to grow tall. It is fast growing but for best results, it should be clipped back every year to produce a nice bushy habit. It will grow in all free draining soils, avoid extreme wind and coastal exposure. They grow rapidly in search of water and nutrients, and as they're finer than the plant's coarse roots, they’re better at reaching them - helping plants thrive in even difficult soils.

In poor sandy soil, they track down scarce nutrients and water, and in dense clay soil they unlock nutrients, acting like a clay breaker.
