From June to September the plant carries on wiry stems ‘pincushion’ flowers with pale pink bracts and deeper pink ‘pins’ in the centre. It seeds about very little, but dead-head the flowers, and it will flower almost all summer. Masterwort Roma An outstanding, long-flowering hybrid masterwort, Astrantia Roma is a small to medium-sized, clump-forming, perennial, which flowers in early summer but nearly always repeat-flowers in autumn. Its delicate colour lights up partial shade, and it tolerates poorly drained soil. The attractive, deeply lobed leaves are mid-green, a lo...

In good light, the slender leaves are olive-green flushed with deep orange-bronze and tipped with orange, turning orange-red in autumn. Insignificant, red-tinted, brown flower-spikes appear in July and August, lengthening as the seeds develop. In very mild areas, New Zealand sedge Prairie Fire is good inter-planted in drifts with hot-coloured perennials or in a gravel planting, but in colder parts it’s better in containers, which can be brought in for the winter. Prefers moist soil, but drought-tolerant once established.
