It’s a small to medium-sized, deciduous old shrub rose of average vigour, with an upright, rounded, twiggy habit, and arching stems with few thorns. The foliage is divided into slightly serrated, ovate leaflets, and emerges red, soon turning mid-green. In our cooler climate, it blooms from early June to the first frosts in clusters of five small, delicate, cupped to flat, double, soft pink blooms, which emerge from red buds and have a medium-strong, delicious, fruity Old Rose fragrance. Occasionally, small red hips form. Can be trained as a short climber, which encourages larger flowers – lovely on a pergola or pillar. It’s a tough, medium-sized, evergreen shrub with a rather upright habit and long, narrow, willow-like, light green leaves. In summer, long, narrow racemes of tiny white to palest blue flowers are borne, which are highly attractive to pollinators. Koromiko will survive an average winter almost anywhere, but can suffer damage in a colder than usual winter. With its upright habit, it can be used as an informal hedge with year-round interest, especially useful in milder coastal areas.

Site: Sheltered; tolerates coastal locations
Soil: Well-drained soil, preferably neutral to alkaline; tolerates poor soils
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of interest: All year, summer in particular
Hardiness: Fairly hardy
Height: 6’6” (2m) Spread: 6’6” (2m)

["Coastal shrubs
"option1":"Pot | 2L","option2":null,"option3":null
[39862028664866
Hebe salicifolia - The heavily divided leathery leaves emerge bronze-red, turning coppery and finally a deep, glossy green. In spring, panicles of small, cream-coloured urn-shaped flowers almost cover the plant. Pieris Mountain Fire holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and is good grown in ericaceous compost in a container, or in dappled shade as part of a woodland planting.
