Trees - Evergreen

While most evergreen trees in Ireland are conifers, there are some broadleaf trees that hold their leaves all year creating shelter and privacy in the depths of winter and providing a pleasing contrast to the bare branches of deciduous trees and shrubs.

Learn more about how to plant a tree in our advice section and find even more information in our resources.

Bareroot evergreen trees | mid-November to March

Bareroot trees are only available from mid-November to March. You can learn more about the differences between bareroot and potted plants in our advice section.

Potted trees are available all year, but the best selection, and the best time to plant, is in late spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October).

The light-green, lance-shaped ‘leaves’ (actually flattened leaf-stems, or phyllodes) are 6”\/15cm long and willow-like, giving this plant its other name of sallow wattle. Cylindrical spikes, 6”\/15cm long, of golden-yellow, mimosa-like flowers with a sweet and spicy fragrance cover the shrub from February to April. The Sydney golden wattle is a handsome shrub with an architectural quality, and gorgeous in flower; it is notably drought-tolerant, the phyllodes being an adaptation to prevent water-loss. The juvenile leaves are almost round and a bright blue-green, and are much loved by flower-arrangers; leaves on older wood are willow-like, longer and deep grey-green, but if the plant is pruned to keep it shrub-sized, the beautiful juvenile foliage is retained. Small, starry white flowers appear in midsummer. Cider gum got its name from the alcoholic drink derived from its fermented sap. The bark is pale grey to pure white with patches of rusty red, cream and olive green, and peels attractively in long strips from the branches and trunk. Emerging shoots and leaves are coppery with a white bloom. The highly aromatic, blue-green, leathery juvenile foliage is very large and almost oblong in shape, becoming lance-shaped and olive green as the tree ages. The white flowers are attractive to bees.
