In June and July and into August, long-lasting, plate-like heads of terracotta-coloured flowers appear, slowly fading to creamy-yellow. It’s a good plant for wild-life: it’s attractive to pollinators, particularly hover-flies, which are very valuable in the garden, and the seeds will provide food for birds. The clump will bulk up to become quite large, without being in any way invasive, and will self-seed mildly. Cut back to prolong flowering. It’s a herbaceous perennial of average vigour with an upright habit and looks beautiful with other late summer plants like shade-loving autumn aconites and Japanese anemones. The stems and leaves, which are divided into five leaflets, are deep purple-bronze, sometimes tinged green when young. Purple buds open to spires of creamy-white bottle-brush flowers in September and October; the flowers are attractive to late pollinators. It is easy to grow if you have reliably moist soil, even poorly drained soil. Cut back in late autumn, and mulch in early spring to conserve moisture. It forms a low mound of softly hairy, deeply divided green leaves. From April to June, wiry stems carry single, pure white flowers with a lilac flush on the backs and dusky, purple-blue stamens. The flowers are pollen- and nectar-rich, very attractive to pollinators. Leveille’s anemone will spread rapidly once established, and hates being moved, so choose your site carefully. The leaves are deep green and very attractively divided, forming good ground cover from quite early in the year. They are good underplanted with ornamental alliums, which flower in early summer, because their developing leaves conceal the withering leaves of the alliums.  From mid-summer, beautiful, pure white flowers with golden stamens rise above the clump. Japanese anemones can spread rapidly in a border, and root deeply, so be sure to plant them in the right place. Cut back after flowering.
