Fruit - Plums, Gages & Damsons

Plums, Gages and Damsons will grow well in the Irish climate and will bear well in a good summer, given fair weather in the spring for blossom and pollinating insects. Plums for eating fresh or cooking, sweet melting Gages and sharp Damsons for preserves and wine - all crop well in Ireland and are a valuable addition to any garden orchard.

Cooking brings out its excellent flavour; it also makes a delicious, deeply-coloured jam. Plum Belle de Louvain is a vigorous, healthy, disease-resistant tree, able to cope with windier situations and late frosts. The relatively large fruit is oval, pale gold freckled with red, with tender, juicy, yellow flesh and a superb flavour with a hint of apricot, perfectly balanced between sweetness and acidity. Best eaten straight from the tree, it will, unusually for a plum, keep for a few days in the fridge, and can also be used for a delicious golden jam. Not a heavy cropper, it needs good conditions to crop well, and may do best fan-trained against a warm wall. As plums have a short flowering season, choose another group 2 plum to pollinate it. Thin the plums in late spring, for better fruit and to prevent branches breaking under the weight. Prune only in summer. Self-fertile, but may crop better if a different variety in the same pollination group is planted nearby.
