Perennials – Old Future Forests
Perennials

Perennials

Hardy herbaceous plants give years of colourful flowers and foliage from a single planting. Many of them die back in the winter, though some only flower in winter! Plan carefully and you can have interesting and ever-changing displays of beautiful perennial blooms throughout the whole year.

To learn more about choosing and growing perennials, check out some of our various articles in our advice section:

Availability and planting | All year

There are perennials for every season, though the largest variety is usually available in spring and summer when they are coming into (and in) bloom! Check back throughout the year to see our ever-changing varieties.

In June and July and into August, long-lasting, plate-like heads of terracotta-coloured flowers appear, slowly fading to creamy-yellow. It’s a good plant for wild-life: it’s attractive to pollinators, particularly hover-flies, which are very valuable in the garden, and the seeds will provide food for birds. The clump will bulk up to become quite large, without being in any way invasive, and will self-seed mildly. Cut back to prolong flowering. The original African lilies come from South Africa, but are surprisingly hardy in our climate, the deciduous varieties being slightly hardier; nevertheless, a thick mulch will help them come through the winter in colder areas. The plant forms a clump of strap-shaped, mid-green leaves. From midsummer, rounded heads of wonderfully rich blue flowers with a deeper blue stripe rise on strong stems from the clump of leaves; the flowers are very attractive to bees. In July and August, tall stems rise above the clump bearing rounded umbels of tubular flowers, white with a very faint, pale blue tinge, stronger blue at the base. The flowers are attractive to pollinators. Agapanthus Enigma is hardy in most gardens, but should be given a deep mulch in very cold areas.
