The soft, bright green, ovate leaves are about 6”/15cm long, and colour yellow in autumn. The glory of this tree is the flowers, which appear in spring. Under the branches, suspended from evenly spaced hanging stems, are bosses of tiny true flowers with red tips, held within two unevenly shaped creamy-white bracts 8”/20cm long; like bird’s wings; these give the tree its alternative name of dove tree. It tolerates hard pruning and can also be trained up the wall of a house.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Any moist but well-drained soil, preferably neutral to acid
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of interest: All year, late summer and autumn in particular
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 49’ (15m) Spread: 26’ (8m), sometimes wider

Images © Acabashi, Creative Commons CC-BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons

Silver Maple

Also known as the water or swamp maple, Acer saccharinum is a large, deciduous tree, with an upright, almost columnar habit, very vigorous and fast-growing. The smooth, silvery-grey bark becomes shaggy on the trunk in older specimens. Small pinkish-yellow flowers appear densely on the bare branches in spring, followed by paired winged seeds (samaras) in early summer, larger than those of most maples. The five-lobed leaves are slightly toothed, a shiny deep green above and white and downy below; on very long leaf-stalks, they move in the slightest breeze, giving a, delicate, airy effect. In autumn they turn pale yellow, sometimes red, colouring less well than most maples. The Silver Maple copes very well with wet soils and urban pollution, but can be damaged by strong winds.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Any reasonable soil, even wet soil
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of Interest: Spring, summer, autumn
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 100ft (30m) Spread: 40ft (12m)

["Common broadleaf trees","Larger ornamental trees","ornamental","ornamental trees","Trees for damp
"option1":"Bareroot | 5-6ft","option2":null,"option3":null
["Bareroot | 5-6ft
["//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Acer_Saccharinum_04.jpg?v=1633344503","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Acer_Saccharinum_01x.jpg?v=1633344502","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Acer_Saccharinum_03.jpg?v=1633344500","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Acer_Saccharinum_02.jpg?v=1633344498
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Acer_Saccharinum_04.jpg?v=1633344503
Type | Size

Silver Maple

Also known as the water or swamp maple, Acer saccharinum is a large, deciduous tree, with an upright, almost columnar habit, very vigorous and fast-growing.
