Roses - Rugosa – Old Future Forests
Roses - Rugosa

Roses - Rugosa

Rugosa roses are resilient and trouble free. Large and, often, scented blooms flower all summer, and in autumn the textured leaves turn yellow which accentuates their big rosehips. They are an excellent choice for growing by the sea as they can tolerate wind and salt well.

Learn more about choosing and planting bareroot roses in our advice section and find even more information in our resources section.

Bareroot roses | mid-November to March

Bareroot roses are only available from mid-November to March. You can learn more about the differences between bareroot and potted plants in our advice section.

Potted roses | all year round

Potted roses are available all year, but the best selection, and the best time to plant, is in late spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October).

The flowers are large, single and a deep carmine, with golden stamens; they are strongly fragrant with the typical rugosa scent – rather like talcum powder. The flowers are followed by round red hips in autumn, if you have not dead-headed too assiduously. Rotes Meer) - Rugosa Rose

A compact form of the tough, healthy, Japanese rugosa rose, Rosa rugosa Exception is a small, vigorous, deciduous shrub rose with a rounded, clump-forming habit, suitable for the smaller garden. The stems are very prickly, and the leaves are deep green, very healthy, and heavily veined, turning colour attractively in autumn. The strongly and deliciously scented flowers are semi-double, purple-pink with a cluster of golden-yellow stamens, and are borne in profusion from May to July. They are followed by big, round, scarlet hips, showy enough to provide further interest into autumn. The fine, glossy, apple-green leaves are very deeply veined, like all rugosa roses, and turn yellow in autumn. From midsummer to autumn, long, deep wine-coloured buds open to masses of velvety, semi-double, informal, purplish-crimson flowers with a very strong, rich, rather spicy scent which carries on the air; flowering is continuous all through summer to early autumn. Makes a very good flowering hedge, and is a reliable, very healthy rose. The divided foliage has deeply wrinkled, glossy, rather leathery, deep green leaflets, which turn rich yellow in autumn. From July to September, the rose bears fragrant, single, magenta-pink flowers with golden stamens, attractive to pollinators. There’s no need to deadhead, as the flowers are followed by huge, round scarlet to orange-red hips, the largest of any rose, which persist on the plant well into winter.
