The large, mid-green leaves are broad, almost round, with a serrated edge, and turn yellow in autumn. The long, yellow male catkins appear in January and February; although the tiny, red-styled female flowers appear on the same tree, they must be pollinated by wind-blown pollen from another tree. From September, the hazel-nuts appear, sheathed in a frilly green husk; they are delicious, and highly nutritious – high in protein, mono-unsaturated fat, minerals and Vitamin E. The berries are long, cylindrical and purplish-black, with a white, waxy bloom, and have a good, sweet-sour flavour. Honeyberry Atut is an early to mid-season cropper, and produces a good amount of berries, which ripen over a long period. The bush grows to about 5’/1.5m. It’s partially self-fertile, but will crop better if grown with a different honeyberry cultivar; mid- to late season Duet is ideal. Honeyberries flower very early in the year when few pollinating insects are about, so you may need to pollinate with a small, soft artist’s brush. Honeyberries flower very early in the year when few pollinating insects are about, so you may need to pollinate with a small, soft artist’s brush. Honeyberries should not be given too much fertiliser or compost, or there will be too much leafy growth at the expense of fruit.

Site: Warm, sheltered, sunny site
Soil: Any well-drained soil, slightly acidic and humus-rich preferred
Position: Full sun
Pick: As soon as the berries are ripe, with a waxy bloom
Keep: Does not keep
Hardiness: Very hardy
Pollination: Partially self-fertile; crops well grown with honeyberry Duet
Uses: Eating fresh, juicing, preserves
"}

Grandiflora is a large, very vigorous, deciduous climber, ideal for covering an ugly (but substantial) wall or building, or climbing through a large, strong tree. The mid-green leaves are in three parts (trifoliate), as is typical of clematis. From late spring to early summer the plant is covered with pure white, scented, four-sepalled flowers with golden centres, larger than those of the species at almost 3” (7cm) across; sporadic flowering continues through the summer. Substantial support is necessary. No regular pruning is required, but if the plant eventually gets out of hand, prune back to pairs of healthy buds immediately after flowering. Keep the roots shaded. Masses of big, cone-shaped flowers, borne on strong stems, emerge creamy-white, gradually turning pink and then deep raspberry-red – the reddest colouration of all the paniculatas. Flowers for months from mid-summer to autumn; for best flowering, prune hard, to within a few buds of the woody framework, in early spring.
