Arbutus unedo Rubra - Future Forests

Red Strawberry Tree

A form of the native Killarney strawberry tree or caithne, Arbutus unedo f. rubra differs from the species only in having deep pink flowers. A small to medium-sized, slow-growing evergreen tree or large shrub, it bears fruit rather like a strawberry to look at, though not in taste. These are borne at the same time as the flowers, in late autumn, taking a year to mature. Glossy, dark green leaves with serrated edges and attractive cinnamon-brown bark, peeling in older specimens; the gnarled habit is also attractive. Useful nectar source for bees, and good for permaculture plantings. Tolerant of salt, the red strawberry tree can be used to stabilise coastal soils, for coastal shelter-belts, and for permaculture planting. The fruit is large, round, and pale yellow, freckled with crimson, and with a bloom; the flesh is pale, transparent, fairly dry and and moderately sweet, with a gage-like flavour and a semi-clinging stone. The tree is vigorous, upright, reliable and easy to grow, but only a moderate cropper and rather slow to come into bearing. Rosa Dublin Bay - Climbing Rose

Rosa Dublin Bay - Climbing Rose

A deservedly popular rose bred in New Zealand by McGredy’s of Portadown, Rosa Dublin Bay is a compact, reliable, repeat-flowering, climbing floribunda rose, ideal for training up a pillar or a modestly-sized wall. The large, divided leaves are healthy and a good, glossy green. The shapely, medium-sized, fully double, rich red flowers are borne in clusters, and repeat, but like those of many floribundas they have little fragrance. Ideal as a climber for the smaller garden, climbing rose Dublin Bay can also be grown untrained, but with some support, as a shrub rose in larger gardens. Phormium Yellow Wave is an evergreen perennial which forms a huge clump of long arching leaves. The long, sword-shaped leaves, up to a metre long, are green with a broad yellow stripe, like a splash of sunlight in the garden. This is a plant to grow for its magnificent architectural quality; the spikes of red flowers are rarely produced in Ireland, but may surprise you in hot summers. New Zealand flax Yellow Wave does well in seaside conditions, but needs winter protection in colder parts of the country.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Soil: Light, well drained soil
Position: Full sun preferred
Season of interest: All year
Hardiness: Frost hardy
Height: 8’ (2.5m) Spread: 5’ (1.5m)
"}

The fruit is very large, round and evenly-shaped, greeny-gold with an orange flush and crimson streaks, often grown for exhibition. The flesh is yellowish tinged with green, soft and quite juicy, very well flavoured, with a good balance of sweet and acid. Juicy and sweet when eaten fresh, they cook down to a delicious purée and are excellent bakers. The tree is moderately vigorous and spreading, and produces spurs freely.
