The tree is bushy with a shapely oval head, and the green leaves develop yellow, red and orange tints in autumn. Profuse white blossom opens from pink buds in April and May is followed by heavy crops of large, egg-shaped, bright red and orange fruits, 3-4 cm long, with a refreshing flavour, particularly good for crab-apple jelly. Any left unpicked will persist on the tree until softened by frost, when the birds will appreciate them. Self-fertile, and a good pollinator for apples in Flowering Groups 3, 4 and 5.

Site: Sheltered or exposed
Soil: Any reasonably well drained soil
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of Interest: Spring, autumn, early winter
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 26-40’ (8-12m) Spread: 13-26’ (4-8m) in 20 years

["Bareroot","Garden trees","ornamental","ornamental trees
"option1":"Pot | 2L","option2":"4-5ft","option3":"1yr | Grafted
Malus John Downie - The leaves emerge copper-purple, turning bronzy-green and remaining so throughout the summer before taking on yellow, red and orange tints in late autumn and falling only very late in the year. Masses of long-lasting, dusky-pink blossom sit well with the emerging leaves. The fruits are small, deep purple, and persist late into winter, eventually providing food for birds. Self-fertile. Good disease-resistance. It’s a small, slow-growing, deciduous tree with an upright, pyramidal habit. The leaves are deep green, turning yellow and bronze in autumn. The fragrant flowers, very large for a crab apple, emerge white from scarlet buds in May, beautiful against the deep green leaves; they are pollen-rich, very attractive to bees, and good pollinators for domestic apple trees. In early autumn, small crab apples in shades of yellow and orange cover the tree, and persist into winter; they are edible and make a gorgeous apple jelly. Deep wine-coloured buds open into fragrant, deep crimson-purple, initially narrow, tulip-shaped flowers, with six slightly twisted tepals, paler inside. They are borne on the bare branches before the leaves appear, later than many magnolias, so are at less risk of being ruined by frost. The leaves are ovate and mid-green, turning golden-yellow in autumn. Magnolia Susan starts flowering early in life, needs little pruning, and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
