{"id":376613077026,"title":"Cherry Early Rivers","handle":"cherry-early-rivers","description":"\u003ch1\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCherry Early Rivers\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA very early variety of sweet cherry, Cherry Early Rivers was bred in England in the mid-19th century. The fruit is very large, heart-shaped and glossy, with almost black skin and flesh and a small stone; very good, sweet flavour.  Vigorous, spreading tree, heavy, regular cropper. Best trained against a warm wall, as the flowers are at risk from early frosts and the fruit from birds. Only prune in summer. The aromatic leaves are divided into three broad leaflets, and scented of orange-blossom; young leaves are a gorgeous lime-green before they change to yellow in full sun. In shade, the leaves retain the lovely lime-green colour, making a bright patch in the border or shady corner.  In May, Mexican orange blossom Sundance bears clusters of starry, pure white flowers, also scented of orange blossom, and may repeat-flower in late August and September, though not as abundantly as the species; dead-heading in spring will encourage repeat-flowering. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
