The foliage is glossy green, narrowly ovate and deeply toothed, although the shape of the leaves on young specimens can be variable. In August masses of pure white, fragrant, five-petalled flowers with prominent yellow stamens appear, at a time when most shrubs and trees are out of flower; it can take a few years to start blooming. It’s reasonably hardy, and thrives in warmer, wetter gardens, but is not for the coldest sites; protect the roots with a mulch in winter. The berries are elongated and unevenly shaped, about 1 ½ inches long, deep blue with a white bloom; the flesh is wine-red when ripe and sweet, very rich in antioxidants, and tastes rather like honeyed blueberries. They can be eaten fresh, baked into cakes and muffins or made into jam or jelly. A mature bush can produce several pounds of berries, not all at once – it crops over a long period. The yellow, frost-resistant flowers come very early, a boon for pollinating insects. It is fast-growing, and gives very high yields. The small white flowers appear in very early spring, and are followed in late June and early July by cylindrical blue berries which hold well on the bush. When fully ripe, the berries have a white bloom and the flesh is deep-red, sweet with a pleasant, slight astringency. The berries are extremely rich in Vitamins C and A and anti-oxidants, and freeze well. Very cold-tolerant, very easy to grow and disease-resistant. The small cream-coloured, tubular flowers appear in very early spring, and are followed in late May or early June by cylindrical blue berries, large for a honeyberry, with a white, waxy bloom and a sweet, tangy, very aromatic taste when ripe. The berries are rich in Vitamins C and A and anti-oxidants, and freeze well. Very cold-tolerant and easy to grow.
