It’s a deciduous, perennial grass with a dense, quite upright, clump-forming, non-invasive habit. The narrow lance-shaped leaves are blue-green, turning orange-yellow, fading to tan, in autumn. In August and September, branching stems rise above the clump, bearing drooping panicles of blue-green spikelets (the flowers). Parrotia persica 'Persian Spire'® differs from most in its narrow, upright form and smaller size, ideal for the smaller garden – it can even be grown in a large container, which will keep it small. A small, columnar tree or large shrub, of average vigour, it gives year-round interest. The leaves, narrower than the species, emerge a rich purple, and turn dark green edged with purple in summer, before turning vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red. After leaf-fall the attractive, exfoliating gray and fawn bark is revealed, then in late winter and early spring tiny red flowers appear on the bare branches. It needs acid soil for the best autumn colour. Very cold-tolerant, healthy and easy to grow.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: moist, well-drained soil, preferably acidic
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of interest: All year
Hardiness: Very hardy
Height: to 25’ (7.5m) Spread: to 10’ (3m) eventually

"option1":"Pot | 9cm","option2":"0.5-0.75ft","option3":"Young plant
Parrotia persica Persian Spire® - Best in warmer areas, trained against a warm wall outside or in a cold greenhouse, or in a container in a polytunnel. The freestone fruit is medium-sized and greenish-white, flushed red, and the creamy-white, sweet flesh has a very good flavour. The tree is moderately vigorous and a good cropper. Some resistance to peach leaf-curl, but outdoor crops should be protected from rain in winter and early spring, and hand-pollinated.

Site: Warm, sheltered
Soil: Any fertile, well drained soil
Position: Full sun essential
Pick: Early-mid July
Keep: Eat as soon as ripe
Hardiness: Hardy
Pollination: Self-fertile
Uses: Eating, cooking

Learn more about fruit tree rootstocks

"}
