It is a valuable habitat tree for many, insects and birds alike, and if that is not enough it produces small, edible but tart cherries and offers excellent Autumn colour, from deep reds to bright oranges and golden yellows. Prunus avium also has attractive bark. The shape is broad and rounded, making for a good specimen tree. The flowers open white, sometimes flushed pink, from bright pink buds, appearing for a very long period in April and May. Heavy crops of small, honey-yellow fruit can be used for making a golden apple jelly or left to hang on the tree into winter, until they soften enough for the birds eat from the tree. The tree is self-fertile, and is an excellent pollinator for apple trees in Flowering Groups 3, 4, 5 and 6. Can be susceptible to scab, so not advised for wetter areas. Pale green apples turn yellow as they ripen; the flesh is crisp and juicy, both sweet and tangy, with a pleasant but not outstanding flavour. Best eaten fresh, as the flavour diminishes in store; use any excess for juicing. The tree is ideal for gardens, being hardy, reliable, non-vigorous and easy to manage. Heavy cropper,  coming into bearing early, and is a good choice where conditions are poor. Partially self-fertile, and a good pollinator; spur-bearer. The Coast Redwood can eventually reach heights of over 300ft making it suitable for large gardens and parks. It grows well in Ireland as a specimen tree where its size and its thick, reddish, spongy bark can be shown off to advantage. Despite its name it does need some protection from coastal exposure. It is known to be among the tallest living tree species and mentioned in the Guinness book of records. There are many fine examples found in parks and Arboretums throughout Ireland. Inconspicuous greenish-yellow male catkins and tiny female flowers appear with the young leaves, and are followed by acorns, whose knobbly cups have noticeable stalks. English oak is a wonderful tree for wildlife; the leaves are larval food for many insects, providing food for birds, and the acorns are winter food for jays, badgers and squirrels – and, long ago, pigs and wild boar. The dead leaves rot down quickly, supporting insects and many fungi. Sometimes, if water is short, this oak becomes ‘stag-headed’, withdrawing water and nourishment from its upper growth so that the rest of the tree thrives. English or pedunculate oak holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
