{"id":399539372066,"title":"Eucalyptus gunnii","handle":"eucalyptus-gunnii","description":"\u003ch1\u003eEucalyptus gunnii - \u003cb\u003eCider Gum\u003c\/b\u003e\n\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProbably the best known hardy eucalypt in Ireland, Eucalyptus gunnii is a large, very fast-growing evergreen tree with an upright, open habit.  Attractively peeling, thin grey bark drops away to reveal yellowish-brown patches which weather beautifully to pinkish- or greenish-grey. The juvenile leaves are almost round and a bright blue-green, and are much loved by flower-arrangers; leaves on older wood are willow-like, longer and deep grey-green, but if the plant is pruned to keep it shrub-sized, the beautiful juvenile foliage is retained. Small, starry white flowers appear in midsummer. Cider gum got its name from the alcoholic drink derived from its fermented sap.
