The flowers rise up in layered whorls on stout stems over broad light-green crinkly cabbage-like leaves from late Spring. Japanese primrose prefer soil that is consistently moist, so a bank by the stream or ponds edge as a marginal is ideal. Primula Millers Crimson will eventually self-seed and colonise. A carpet of crimson candelabras mixed in with ferns and Hostas is something to behold. A good pollinator plant for the bees in spring and both deer and rabbit resistant. These exotic looking leaves can be as large as 2 foot wide. Above these, large airy spikes of star shaped, white or pink flowers appear in midsummer followed by red seedheads in autumn. Rodgersia prefers moist soil in dappled shade, but will grow in full sun at the water’s edge. An ideal specimen by itself or mixed with other large damp ground lovers such as Ligularia, Astilbes and ferns. It has a compact, bushy habit, making it good for the smaller garden, and the glossy, aromatic leaves are deep green, a lovely foil for the rich red flowers. These are carried on dark purplish-green flower-stems from late May to the first frost, and are very good for pollinators. Ornamental sage Royal Bumble is good in sheltered coastal gardens, being more salt-tolerant than most sages, and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Any light, well-drained soil
Position: Full sun; tolerates light shade
Season of interest: Late spring to autumn
Hardiness: Fairly hardy (to -10ºC)
Height: 30” (75cm) Spread: 18” (45cm)

Photos by Cultivar413 and Ellie Enking, cropped, and licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0.
"}
