Ovate, 3- to 5-lobed, bright green leaves turn bronzy red and purple in autumn, and have a spicy scent. In mid-spring, hanging racemes of tubular, pale yellow flowers are borne; these have a rich, clove-like scent which is carried on the air. The flowers are a good nectar source for pollinators, and are followed in autumn by black, currant-like berries. Easy to grow, buffalo currant is less pungent and garish-looking than the common flowering currant, and looks particularly well with narcissus, pulmonarias and blue spring bulbs.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Any light, well drained soil
Position: Full sun
Season of interest: Spring in particular
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: up to 8’ (2.5m) Spread: 8’ (2.5m)

"option1":"Pot | 4L","option2":null,"option3":null
["Pot | 4L
"option1":"Bareroot | 2-3ft","option2":null,"option3":null
["Bareroot | 2-3ft
["//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_01_c6d4ea64-54eb-40e4-82f9-0cf7255f7e97.jpg?v=1569346990","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_02_2eca7756-527e-472c-8cb6-2c74044a0cab.jpg?v=1569346990","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_03_46a453fd-0630-4d17-a177-d948d298bc22.jpg?v=1569346990","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_04_ca8d7afd-8cfe-4e09-8298-f6fce4063811.jpg?v=1569346990
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_01_c6d4ea64-54eb-40e4-82f9-0cf7255f7e97.jpg?v=1569346990
Type | Size
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_01_c6d4ea64-54eb-40e4-82f9-0cf7255f7e97.jpg?v=1569346990
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_01_c6d4ea64-54eb-40e4-82f9-0cf7255f7e97.jpg?v=1569346990
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_02_2eca7756-527e-472c-8cb6-2c74044a0cab.jpg?v=1569346990
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_02_2eca7756-527e-472c-8cb6-2c74044a0cab.jpg?v=1569346990
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_03_46a453fd-0630-4d17-a177-d948d298bc22.jpg?v=1569346990
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_03_46a453fd-0630-4d17-a177-d948d298bc22.jpg?v=1569346990
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_04_ca8d7afd-8cfe-4e09-8298-f6fce4063811.jpg?v=1569346990
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Ribes_Odoratum_aureum_04_ca8d7afd-8cfe-4e09-8298-f6fce4063811.jpg?v=1569346990

Buffalo Currant

Once known as Ribes aureum, Ribes odoratum is a medium-sized, deciduous shrub with an upright, arching habit and downy young shoots. It’s a small, slow-growing, evergreen shrub with a dense, mounded habit. The aromatic leaves are narrow, deep green and leathery, making the plant drought-resistant once established. In mid- to late spring, panicles of scented, creamy-white flowers open from red buds; these are a valuable nectar source for pollinators. It’s a large, deciduous shrub with an arching, spreading habit and deep purplish-red stems. The leaves are pointed, slender ovals. Viburnum setigerum has distinctive foliage that takes on colours throughout the seasons, from metallic blue-green in the Spring, green in Summer and finally Autumnal oranges and yellows. Heads of creamy-white flowers are produced in April and May, followed by an abundance of red oval fruit which hang in pendulous clusters. Viburnum setigerum is one of the best Viburnums for Autumn berries. The old Chinese monks used the leaves to produce a sweet tea, though the berries can cause tummy upsets.
