It’s a medium-sized, fast-growing, deciduous shrub with an upright, rounded habit. The slightly toothed, elliptical, pointed leaves are mid-green and the flowering stems are sturdy, well able to support the masses of cone-shaped flower-panicles, 4”/10cm across, which are borne for a long period in late summer and autumn. The leaves emerge mid- to deep green, quite early, on attractive red stems. From midsummer, the shrub carries large, conical, white flowers, some showy sterile ones and some, fertile ones, which age to pink. Hydrangea Magical Andes is small enough to be grown in a large container. Leave the flowers over winter to protect next year’s buds in cooler areas. The heart-shaped leaves emerge yellow, and fade to a delicate primrose colour – grow in partial shade to prevent scorching of the leaves. In July, August and September, the plant bears 4 inch-long tassels of white flowers with showy, wine-coloured bracts; these are followed by very deep purple berries. Be aware that the plant can become invasive, as birds can spread seed from the berries into walls, paths and other plantings. Also known as Himalayan honeysuckle, pheasant bush Golden Lanterns attracts pollinators, birds and other wild-life, and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Any moist, well drained soil
Position: Partial shade
Season of interest: Spring, summer, autumn
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: up to 6’6” (2m) Spread: up to 6’6” (2m)

["Coastal shrubs
"option1":"Pot | 9cm","option2":"Young plant","option3":null
Leycesteria formosa Golden Lanterns -
