Rhubarb Glaskin’s Perpetual

Raised in Brighton in 1920, Rheum x hybridum Glaskin’s Perpetual is a very reliable rhubarb, and quick to establish. The stems are long, thick, bright red, and sweet and juicy with a good flavour. Because it has a low oxalic acid content, it can be picked until late in the year (hence the name ‘Perpetual’) giving it a long season of productivity. Rhubarb Glaskin’s Perpetual is also good for forcing – covering the crown in late December or early January with a rhubarb forcer or a black bin for an early crop of pale, sweeter, deliciously tender stems; allow the plant to recover the following year. Rhubarb is productive for 10 years, and is a very easy, low-maintenance crop. A manure or compost mulch every winter will ensure a good crop; make sure the organic matter does not touch the crown. The berries are said to be anti-inflammatory, adaptogenic and rich in anti-oxidants and are used in traditional medicine to fight ageing and fatigue. Magnolia berry is a hardy, deciduous, woody vine growing at a moderate rate to 30’/ 9m. It thrives in partial shade and humus-rich soil, and is thus ideal as a crop for forest gardening. The leaves are mid-green, almost heart-shaped and in groups of three. Small, fragrant flowers appear in spring, followed by clusters of brilliant red berries.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Moist but well drained, humus-rich soil
Position: Partial shade
Pick: Autumn, as soon as fully ripe
Keep: Will keep if dried
Hardiness: Very hardy
Pollination: Need male and female for fruit - plant several plants to ensure pollination
Uses: Medicinal
["Unusual Edibles
"option1":"Pot | 9cm","option2":null,"option3":null
["Pot | 9cm
["//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Schisandra_chinensis_5.jpg?v=1633367429","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Schisandra_chinensis_2.jpg?v=1633367424","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Schisandra_chinensis_3.jpg?v=1633367422
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Schisandra_chinensis_5.jpg?v=1633367429
Type | Size

Magnolia Berry

A medicinal plant from Northern China, Schisandra chinensis is also called Five-Flavour Berry from its odd taste, which combines sweet, salty, bitter, sour and spicy. The mid-red, glossy, well-shaped fruit is juicy and firm, with a sweet, very good flavour. Plant 13”/35cm apart, with 30”/75cm between the rows, and the crown level with the soil; hoe regularly – strawberries can be a weedy crop. As the fruit develops, place straw or mulching mats under the berries and net to protect from birds. Pick every other day, preferably in dry weather. As runners appear, remove all but one, to keep vigour in the parent plant, and when the runners have rooted, start a new bed – most strawberries crop much less after three years. The berries are medium-sized, conical, and, like other white strawberries, intensely aromatic, with a suggestion of pineapple in the taste. A vigorous variety, it is disease-resistant and hardy and a far heavier cropper than other white strawberries. Because of the colour, the berries are less vulnerable to birds than conventional strawberries. Tayberries are very vigorous, consistent growers and reliable, heavy croppers. Fruits on 2nd year wood, so they should ideally be grown like summer raspberries, on wire supports- but can also be trained against a wall. The juicy, aromatic, deep purple fruit looks and tastes rather like a loganberry, but is larger and sweeter. Rich in vitamins, fibre and antioxidants. Pick as they ripen, over several weeks.
