Apple Beauty of Bath

An old, very early dessert apple, bred in Somerset and very widely grown in Ireland, where it was especially popular with children. Apple ‘Beauty of Bath’ produces slightly flattened, medium-sized, pale greenish-yellow fruit striped with red, juicy and with a good sharp flavour, the last to ripen being sweeter. The flesh is cream-coloured, often with a pink stain, with a good balance of sweet and acid. Spur-bearer. Blossom fairly resistant to frost damage. Has a tendency to drop its fruit as it ripens; spread straw under the tree to prevent bruising. Like all early apples, it does not keep, so eat fresh and juice any excess for a pretty, pinkish juice. Apple Beauty of Bath remains popular, not just because it’s one of the first to crop but because it’s very resistant to scab, an increasing problem in Irish conditions.

Site: Semi-sheltered
Soil: Any reasonably well drained
Position: Crops best in full sun
Pick: August
Keep: Does not keep
Hardiness: Hardy
Pollination: Group 2 (pollinates with Groups 1, 2 and 3)
Uses: Eating apple; The tree is attractive, very large and vigorous; the pale pink flowers attract pollinators, including moths (which attract bats). Apple Blenheim Orange is well adapted to cooler, rainier climates, being very resistant to scab, and has some resistance to mildew. A partial tip-bearer, it tends to biennial bearing; thin heavy crops to prevent this. It’s a triploid, so must be grown with two other varieties, to pollinate it and each other. The fruit is large, with pale green skin with a lovely, red-orange flush. The flesh is creamy-white, juicy and sweet, and just keeps its shape when cooked; if you like a tart, juicy apple it can be eaten from store from October onwards. The tree is a spur-bearer, and a heavy cropper. With pretty white, scented blossom over a long period, it needs to be planted near an apple of the same or adjacent pollination group. Apple Camelot is a fairly vigorous tree, very healthy, with particularly good scab resistance, so particularly suitable for organic growing. Partial tip-bearer, so can’t be used for trained forms. Attractive pink blossom. Also cooks well, especially in open tarts, as the slices retain their shape. Apple Charles Ross is of average vigour, a spur-bearer, and a reliable cropper. Good, easy-to-grow, garden apple, and a good choice for alkaline soil, as it is more tolerant of lime than other apples. Good disease-resistance, excellent resistance to scab. Small, green, aromatic apples, sometimes flushed or flecked with red, produce a bitter-sweet juice of such quality that it can be used for single varietal ciders. Small, upright, spreading tree, cropping reliably and well; spur-bearer. Resistant to scab and canker. A good choice where there’s room for only one cider apple, or where late frosts are a risk.
