If unclipped, it can reach 4m, a large, evergreen shrub with a tall, very dense habit which makes it ideal where a very protective, wind-resistant hedge is needed. New leaves emerge bronze-orange, contrasting well with the older, dark green leaves; twice yearly clipping means two seasons of colour. In spring, spikes of small, scented white flowers appear; these are followed in autumn by shiny black berries. Be aware that all parts of the plant are toxic, including the drip from the leaves, which will prevent any other plants growing beneath.

Site: Tolerates exposure, including coastal exposure
Soil: Any reasonably well drained soil
Position: Full sun, partial shade, shade
Season of interest: All year
Hardiness: Very hardy
Height: up to 13’ (4m) Spread:

"option1":"Pot | 2L","option2":null,"option3":null
Prunus laurocerasus Etna - Plants are either male or female. The deep green leaves are finely divided and reliably turn brilliant orange, gold and red in autumn. In summer curious cone-shaped yellow-green flower-heads appear, and on female plants, these are followed by by dense, velvety cones of deep crimson berries, which persist into winter. Stag’s horn sumach is a good specimen tree for a small sunny garden or courtyard, provided the suckers are pulled off, but it is best not planted in a lawn or border.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Soil: Any well drained soil, preferably moist
Position: Full sun
Season of interest: Summer, autumn, winter
Hardiness: Very hardy
Height: 20’ (6m) Spread: 20’ (6m)

"}

The glossy, mid-green leaves are heart-shaped. Rounded, conical clusters of richly scented, single flowers, deep lilac with reddish edges, appear in late spring and early summer, and are a wonderful nectar source for pollinators. The ovate leaves are mid-green, a pretty foil for the flowers. In May and June, purple buds open to large spires of fragrant, four-petalled, tubular, double flowers in shades of lilac-pink, pale pink, mauve and purple, with a small white eye. Give an organic mulch in spring to conserve moisture. Needs very little pruning, just careful deadheading, so as not to damage the young shoots underneath.
