The oval leaves are mid- to deep green, and colour well in autumn. In January and February, large, spidery, deep purplish-crimson flowers are borne on the bare branches; these have an elusive, spicy fragrance. Witch hazel Birgit is easy to grow, and does not really need pruning, although it may flower better if you do; any suckers are best removed, however. The big, slightly glossy, deep green leaves are pointed and oval with a serrated edge. From July to late September, slender conical panicles of creamy-white flowers appear, with a particularly elegant mixture of sterile and starry fertile florets, very attractive to pollinators. Paniculate hydrangea Kyushu can be pruned back quite hard in early spring. This lovely hydrangea was brought from Japan by Collingwood ‘Cherry’ Ingram of flowering cherry fame.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Soil: Moist but well-drained, humus-rich, neutral to acid soil
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of interest: Late summer to mid-autumn
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 16’ (5m) Spread: 8’ (2.5m)

Photos by David Stang and Ellie Enking, cropped, and licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 and 4.0.
"}
