Hawthorn, Whitethorn, or ‘Sceach gheal’ in Irish, it goes under many names and is one of our most important native hedgerow species. It makes a fantastic neat deciduous hedge as it clips well but can also be left to grow. Crataegus monogyna is easily recognisable in the month of May when its thorny branches are smothered in white flowers; the Autumn brings an abundance of its famous red haws which can be used to make jam or delicious Hawthorn jelly. A very important species that supports lots of wildlife. Hawthorn can often be found near holy wells and it is famous in Irish lore as the Fairy Tree - it is considered unlucky to cut an old one down. It will grow in most soils and will take wind and coastal exposure.

Site: Will tolerate inland and coastal exposure
Soil: Any reasonable soil other than very wet
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of Interest: Blossom in Spring, berries in Autumn
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 13-26ft (4-8m) Spread: 13-26ft (4-8m)

["Bareroot","coastal hedging","Coastal trees","native","Native trees","thorny hedging
"option1":"Bareroot | 1ft","option2":"Not provided","option3":"Certified Irish seed
Crataegus monogyna - Crataegus prunifolia has an unusual glossy oval leaf, long thorns and the familiar white flowers in May that are followed by extra big, deep red berries that persist on the tree for a long time. The leaves on the Plum Leaved Hawthorn often turn a lovely orange-red in Autumn and it has the toughness you would expect from a Hawthorn. The bark is beautiful, in shades of milk chocolate and caramel with lime-green streaks, and peels attractively in long strips. The highly aromatic, glossy green foliage is round to oval when young, becoming lance-shaped as the tree ages, and is good for flower-arranging. The unobtrusive white flowers are attractive to bees. Tasmania yellow gum makes an attractive specimen tree and can also be used for a shelter belt; it’s visually comfortable in the rural landscape. Pretty, scented, saucer-shaped white flowers over 2” (6 cm) across and with prominent golden stamens are borne in August and September, making a stunning display against the dark leaves. Nymans eucryphia thrives where the roots are shaded and the crown is in the sun, so is best grown among other, shorter, acid-loving shrubs and trees such as hydrangeas, camellias or pieris. Hardier than most eucryphias, but may suffer in severe winters, or in very cold areas.

Site: Sheltered
Soils: Moist, well-drained, neutral to acid soils
Position: Full sun and partial shade
Season of interest: All year
Hardiness: Reasonably hardy to about -10°C
Height eventually to 50’ (15m) Spread to 13’ (4m)

["Evergreen trees
"option1":"Pot | 7.5L","option2":"6ft","option3":"Collection/oversize delivery required
["Pot | 7.5L","6ft","Collection/oversize delivery required
["//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Eucryphia_x_nymansensis01.jpg?v=1569337897","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Eucryphia_x_nymansensis02.jpg?v=1569337897","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Eucryphia_x_nymansensis03.jpg?v=1569337897","//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Eucryphia_x_nymansensis04.jpg?v=1569337897
//future-forests.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/Eucryphia_x_nymansensis01.jpg?v=1569337897
Type | Size","Height","Details

Nymans Eucryphia

An excellent hybrid eucryphia or leatherwood raised at the famous Nymans garden in the early 1900s, Eucryphia x nymansensis Nymansay is a large growing evergreen tree with a dense, upright, columnar habit and glossy, dark green leaves divided into three leaflets.
