The large, green leaves, divided into 5-7 oblong leaflets, and with a citrus scent when crushed, appear quite late in spring, and do not fall until November. The flowers appear at the same time as the leaves; the male catkins are about 4”/10cm long and the female flowers much smaller, and wind-pollinated. Velvety green, round fruits appear in June, within which form the nutritious nuts, high in protein, omega 3 oil and antioxidants. Be aware that the common walnut casts a heavy shade and also produces a substance that inhibits the growth of many other plants. Not a reliable nut producer in Ireland, but a beautiful tree.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Soil: Any well drained soil
Position: Full sun
Season of interest: Autumn in particular
Hardiness: Very hardy
Height: up to 115’ (35m) Spread: 60’ (18m)
Pollination: Self-fertile, but fruits better with another walnut
Uses: Nuts can be eaten fresh or salted; in late June, before the shells have set, the fruits can be pickled

["Bareroot","Common broadleaf trees
"option1":"Bareroot | 1-2ft","option2":"Not provided","option3":"Not provided
Juglans regia - It’s a medium-sized to tall, deciduous tree of medium growth-rate with a very upright, almost columnar habit when young, spreading somewhat as it matures. The elliptical leaves are mid-green. The large, cup-shaped flowers, whose splayed petals display shades from carmine to rose-pink to shell-pink, emerge on the bare branches, and are strongly scented, with a rather fruity fragrance. It’s an easy, adaptable magnolia; if any pruning is needed, it should be done in midsummer. Magnolia Daybreak holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and is an excellent choice as a specimen, drawing all eyes when in flower.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Well drained, humus-rich, acid to neutral soil
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of interest: Spring in particular
Hardiness: Hardy
Height: up to 33’ (10m) Spread: 10’ (3m)

["Garden trees","ornamental","ornamental trees
"option1":"Pot | 2L","option2":"Not provided","option3":null
Magnolia Daybreak - The shiny, fresh green leaves are elliptical in shape, and turn copper-bronze in autumn. Beautifully scented, soft pink, goblet-shaped flowers, with a deeper pink flush on the outside of the eight petals, are borne in March-April from rose-pink buds, with a few flowers appearing in July.
