The Plume Poppy is a striking architectural plant with large powdery grey-green scalloped leaves topped in late Summer by cream coloured plumes. Plume Poppy prefers well drained moist soil in part shade, but is tolerant of most soil types. Partners well with Nicotiana sylvestris. A very large spreading tropical looking perennial, plant it in its own spot to form an impressive clump or mix near the back of the border. An interesting addition to the medicinal garden. It’s a mint with a definite taste of apples. The ovate, pointed, slightly hairy leaves are light green. Dense spikes of tiny, tubular, light purple flowers are borne in summer, and should be cut back to preserve the taste of the leaves. This plant is highly invasive and should be confined to a large pot – don’t sink it deeply into the soil, as the rhizomes are shallow and will escape, even into grass. Divide and replant into fresh compost every March as the plant starts into growth; alternatively, in autumn. It likes damp sites, which is good news as it will cover the darker, wetter parts of your garden happily, all the while giving off a beautiful peppermint scent when trodded, not unlike pennyroyal. It will tolerate some traffic, so consider using it to line walkways or in between stepping stones. Easy to grow in containers as well, should you like to have some close to the window, as Corsican Mint is also used in cuisine, most famously as the flavouring in crème de menthe.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Soil: Any moist, but not waterlogged
Position: Part to full shade
Season of Interest: Mauve flowers July-Aug, edible aromatic foliage, tolerates light foot traffic
Hardiness: Hardy to -4C
Height: 3in (0.1m) Spread: up to 1ft (0.3m)

"}
